Poetry- Table of Contents Poem
I was searching through The Practice of Poetry looking for some fun new ways to approach kids writing their own works and came across an assignment called "Index/ Table of Contents Exercise" by Lee Upton. I liked the idea of their life being a listing of where they came from and where else they can go from here. When finalized, the assignment came out as, "List ten significant people events in your life. Think of your life as a book; these are the chapters. Group together what can be compiled. Make sure to create a creative title for each chapter using a poetic term. Also the numbers of pages in a chapter should be refelctive of their importance. "
Here are some samples of their works in progress. Please feel free to give some commentary as well as constructive criticism.

Kjerstin~ I really like what you have done by braking each chapter into a section.
DanH~I like all of the things that you have put in your poem, and I bet all of those things are important (events) in your life, but I think you may want to narrow it down and just do the really, really important events and maybe people in your life, but I do think it is good.
Erin~ I love the chapter title, Sisters and Dog – “My Best Friends and My Worst Enemies.” My sisters and I are like this too, sometimes best friends, other times loathing each other.
Dan~I agree with Shelby, your poem is too long. Try making a list of your top ten things in life and inlcuding only those things in your poem.

Dan~Ignore my last comment, now that I think about it, mine is really long too.
These poems were really cool. Reading the titles made me curious about the stories and memories behind them. Dan, I liked reading your poem, and Paige, yours was really unique in how you made all the lines rhyme. Good job everybody!!
Emily L- I liked the fact that your poem was very clear on the topics that were to be covered in each- Something I'm afraid that my poem is not!
Emily A- The titles of your chapters are very clever! I like the different structure.
Laura B- Great poem. It's very detailed and has good titles for its chapters.
Erin- I like how the titles of the chapters told not only what is important to you but also why they are important.
Zach F- I love how all of your chapters have a theme of sports. It is kind of interesting how you imply an important part of your life throughout the entire table of contents.
Dan H- The chapter names are good, but I agree with everyone else that there are a bit too many.
Shelby B- I like how you have a lable for each of the people or things in your chapters. It made it clear as to what you were going to talk about in each chapter.

Wow sorry my poem is all messed up.
Ok...mine is a completely different format...so...yah...it's also kind of long and raw...here it goes!
When young, life is slow,
Like the beginning of a story
Simple introductions, Bob met Joe.
The introductions grow into friendships
Baa and Tenku will be friends forever
From the first page onward, they’re mentioned
The first few chapters are always boring
Pagees 3-7 set the stage for the story
By page 8 still dancing, and believing
The fairy tale begins to end
Unicorns and fairies depart, by 10
There is a hole that cannot mend.
By page 14 I discover my love of traveling
Places to go, people to see, things to do
Every place I visit, I’m learning
Slowly life picks up pace
Suddenly, all that was concrete
Is now fragile lace.
The move to Boise is found on page 20
And within that section is new material
New friends, new places, a new me.,
Music becomes more prominent
Pages 26-28 are dedicated to Musicales
Sound of Music, Cats, and Rent.
Who can say what will happen next?
What will I do? Who will I meet?
What problems will arise before the climax?
I don't know if anyone will even read this but...
