Period 2 At-Home Fishbowl!

Why do you think thatt they keep changing who they are at war with? Why doesn't anybody notice when it changes? Is there any signifigance that Winston seems to be the only one that does notice?

Thanks,

I am not sure why they keep changing who they are at war with. I know that they are at war to have everyone hate the same thing but maybe they change because if someone notices that they have been at war with the same country for like 20 years, then it would get a bit suspicious. But if they switch it up it just seems like everyone is against them. I don't know why Orwell made Winston the only one that notices, I am still not sure why he is the only one that can remember ANYTHING about the past.

I think that one reason they keep changing who they are at war with for the same reason that they keep changing the past. They want to make sure that every word the BB says is correct, so maybe he makes comments about either country, and therefore they have to change who they are having war with.

I wonder if the other two countries have the same policies and procedures as them, and thats why they are able to always change who the war is with?? Like, if they change their history too?

I think no one notices when they change the past because they are already so "brainwashed". They have been taught and trained to listen to the Party and the BB so they automatically just believe everything they are told.

I think that since Winston is one of the only people that notices them changing everything, he will one day rebel against the BB and party more than he already has; and he may have other people do the same.

Good Questions Guys.

First, no one knows when it changes because they don't remember who they were at war before. The Party changes history and so the people don't even know any better. But like Chelsea said, BB is maybe trying to spread their own ideas to other countries. They know that they have to change the country that their fighting with so that they can try having totally.

I think that the second question goes back to the fishbowl converstaion about how Winston is the "chosen one." I think that Winston just has a drive to remeber things from the past. He may have this drive more than others. I think that if other people wanted to find out the past as much as he did, they could. But since they are completely brainwashed, they may think that that idea is ridiculous.

I think that they really are at war, but the enemy changes. Sure at least some if not all of the bombs are probably dropped by the government, but my theory is that they really are at war. I think that none of the nations is strong enough to defeat another. Therefore, they make allies. Then once they have an advantage, they attack their temporary ally by surprise. Even though the armies of all countries know that there will eventually be betrayal, they still continue to make alliances because they would be crushed without help.
Just my theory--It's a little stupid, but the best I could think of.

I've been wondering why people don't escape to the other countries if they don't like what life is like where they are. Also, Does it really matter who they are at war with? Just some more ideas to get the ball rolling. Good Job guys! Period 2 is the best!

I think they do because they can. They get bored with the propaganda, and they decide to change the opponent. Like Julia said, they might not even be dropping REAL bombs. They just mean to keep everybody hating and feeling good. Kathryn- they probably don't escape because they think that the war is going on there. The same goes for those countries who's people want to move to Winston's country. They think that there is a war there as well.....

just my thoughts

The party changing the war is another sign that the wars might not be even real. They might just be another way of instilling fear and keeping more control over the people. The possibly fake war could be also to keep the people working hard and to unite them against a common cause.

I agree with Alex. I'm not even sure that the war is really going on or, like Phillip said, if it is just another way to make the people afraid so that they cling to the protection of the Party. I think that the enemies keep changing because the Party either gets bored of the propaganda and having the same enemy all the time, like Alex stated, or they just need someone new to hate and a new threat to cause fear. If the war actually is going on, the Party probably keeps changing the enemy just because in war things constantly change- new territory is gained, some is lost, men die, leaders fall, etc. The course of the war, if it exists, probably forces the Party to switch allies once in a while because old allies may fall away, and new ones rise to take their place.

I agree with phillip, the wars are just a way of instilling new fear into the people. But they also give the people a new sense of patriotism for Oceania when there is a new war, just like in America. When we invaded Afghanistan, everyone was proud to be American, and the same happened in Iraq. Now, 4 years later, that sense of patriotism is gone.

I think there are a few possibilities for why the Party keeps on changing who they're fighting against in the war. One could be because they feel that they need to keep the war more interesting, just to keep the people loyal about the war. Remember, WAR IS PEACE. Also, maybe it's just to keep the Party members busy with something, even if the war isn't real. If their minds are on that, then they aren't on the ways of the government and such like Winston. Although I do doubt that Winston's the only one who doesn't see the significance. There must be some others like him.

They seem to keep changing it without anyone noticing because they change history so much that it seems like the rest of the population, forgets what they were told earlier. They also sort of have to keep the country at war because it increases the hatred that the citizens have. It is weird that Winston seems to be the only one who notices, but yet he is the only character we are completely introduced to there may be others who notice but it would be against the law to say anything.

I agree with what basically everyone else has said. They are able to change it without people noticing because they change history. I think elyse made a good point by saying that we don't know if other people have noticed because Winston is the only real person that we are introduced to that is thinking these thoughts.
But these questions made me think of another question. Do the other countries that are on and off at war with them notice the change in enemies and alliances? Because I believe that BB only changes history in his country, but does he also change the worlds history? Does someone have an explanation for that?

and Shauna and Chelsea-
Good observation! I do beleive that we are always better than period five. It's scientific fact!

I think that the Party keeps changing who they are at war with in order to ensure that the people always have a high level of hatred for one nation or the other and that they always have a strong sense of nationality towards Oceania. After a while of being at war with Eurasia, perhaps the people were starting to grow less worried or afraid of Eurasia. By switching the enemy, the Party creates a high level of fear and unity amongst the people which in turn makes them loyal towards the Party and Oceania.

No one notices when it changes because when the Party changes the enemy, the old enemy becomes part of the past. The Party controls the past and could simply change it so the people would have no recolection of the previous war.

Like elyse said, we dont really know if Winston is the only person who notices that the Party keeps changing the enemy. But we have also learned that Winston is a much different character in that he is not trained like the other members of his society. Winston actually thinks about what he is being told rather than just listening to what he is told and believing it.

I think they keep changing the name of the country they are at war with so that none of the proles and maybe even the Party members will start to think about why they're at war. If the name is constantly changed, it just makes the people think that Oceania is a strong country (which may be true anyway) and are constantly winning the war they are fighting. No one notices that it gets changed because history is constantly erased everyday. Anything significant that may have happened one day, is immidiately erased and/or changed the next day. Also, no one notices because people are just too dim-witted to really notice anything like that. Well...except for Winston of course. He probably notices these changes, one, because he is one of the people that erase history everyday, and one day he probably just saw that the name of the country had changed. The significance of him noticing this would just be adding to his rebelliousness (is that a word?). Winston actually tries to stay up-to-date with what is going on in Oceania and with the countries around him. This includes things that happen with this supposed war.

The war is just a way to keep the people ignorant and oblivious.
The war will never end and by being in a war the gvt can create hate for others... BB uses it as an aid to rule the people.

I think that they change who they are at war with to match who the inner parties public enemy is. Once Goldstein was a threat, Eurasia became the threat too. People dont notice because everything in the past has been changed to match that information as well. But what i really think is that the war is created by Big Brother to create a comment hate and fear and it helps control the people. Big Brother looks like the hero for "winning the war" when in reality i think he is creating a false one. but it makes it look like, to the people, that their leader is great and their needs to be no changes in Big Brother

I think the government has the people so brain-washed and that they try to make the people have hate towards an enemy and the enemy only, that no body ever notices except Winston. Since Winston knows history and what is was like before i think that he is one of the only ones who notices. I think this is significant because maybe it proves that he is capable of overthrowing the government because he understands how it runs.

I think they keep changing who they are at war with to keep the hate alive. If they stay at war with one country or population, the people may develop some sort of sympathy for them.

I don't think there is any real significance for the changing of the enemy of the party. I think that it is only that way because the party is very aggressive and knows that war is a way to keep peace in oceania. The reason Winston notices this change is because he taught himself to notice those things just as e remembered that the chocolate ration went down instead of up.

Pretty much like everyone is saying, they always want Big Brother to be correct. I think they dont remember the flip-flopping of enemies because they dont want to. They dont want to know about how bad the government is because that is all they know and that is all they will ever know.
